“We moved to Hamilton 4 years ago and we were making a decision about whether we could move here. We visited the Hamilton Gardens & looked at all the gardens. It was pouring with rain and for some reason we found ourselves going across this muddy field and then we found ourselves outside this wall that said “Sustainable Backyard” and it was buzzing with life. It was just bursting with life and zinging. I just went, “Oh my god!” I was a bit of a gardener –I didn’t have heaps of skills- but the experience of this garden that was being done in a permaculture way – it wasn’t just a display garden, it had life in it.
The Sustainable Backyard was a route in to permaculture. I wasn’t totally unaware of organics or permaculture. I was interested in wider philosophical implications- where it connects with food & culture- all the way from the gardens to playing music or looking after the older generation.”
