Take a virtual journey through the Sustainable Backyard at Hamilton Gardens. This demonstration garden shows how a typical suburban backyard can be transformed into a productive, edible landscape that provides a continuous supply of organic fruit and vegetables throughout the year.

LAYOUT
The layout of the garden not only affects how much sun, wind and rain each area gets but also affects how easy it is to work in the garden. Things that are used everyday and that need regular attention can be positioned near the house so it’s easier to tend to them. In the Sustainable Backyard at Hamilton Gardens there is a salad clipping garden, lemon tree and outdoor eating area right next to the ‘house’. Less accessible parts of the garden are planted with perennial plants, fruit trees, berries and natives that don’t need constant attention.
